Restaurant food you can trust

Another Friday, another brilliant (even if I do say so myself) feature on Food You Can Trust in The Derby Telegraph and on our website.

This week I chatted to Nigel Scotter, catering manager at The Garden Restaurant and Coffee Shop at Swarkestone Nursery in South Derbyshire, which specialises in "simple food done really well".

It only opened last year, but has already scooped awards for the quality of its food, and its ethos of sourcing as many ingredients as possible locally.

Meat comes from farms within a 20-mile radius and a notice in the restaurant tells diners about the farms. Vegetables are pulled from the fields nearby and the eggs come from Etwall Happy Hens, a free-range farm which also runs a social project to help disadvantaged young people.

Nigel had some really interesting things to say about keeping it local. He said he just didn't see the sense in going to supermarkets or big suppliers when here in Derbyshire we have such a wealth of amazing food being produced right on our doorsteps.
